The Dent d’Hérens is a superb mixed route on horseback between Switzerland (Valais) and Italy.
The climb is via the Tiefenmatten ridge, the start for the route goes through the Aosta refuge in Valpelline, before reaching the rocky ridge of Tiefenmatten, aerial and equipped. At the top, magnificent views of the Matterhorn and Monte Rosa!
By the Tiefenmatten ridge
Day 1
Departure from the dike of Place Moulin in Valpelline where we follow the track that leads to the Prarayer refuge (2010 m.). You will join in about 4 hours walk the refuge Aosta (2781 m.) By a beautiful path under the larches, between torrents and moraines. Dinner and overnight at the shelter.
Day 2
Departure from the shelter at 3 o’clock. Climb the glacier of the Grandes Murailles before reaching the Tiefenmatten ridge, passing through a steep but equipped corridor. Passages of third degree. Arrival at the summit and descent by the same route.
1400 m of ascent and descent and approximately 5 hours for the ascent, and as much for the descent to the refuge Aosta.
By the Albertini ridge (passages of 5th degree)
Day 1
Departure from Breuil Cervinia and climb to the Dent d’Hérens (3957 m.) by the Albertini ridge. Descent and night at Perelli bivouac. Count around 10h-11h of walking and climbing in altitude. Ascent: about 1900 m.
Day 2
Descent on the Grandes Murailles glacier to the Aosta refuge, then return via Prarayer and the Place Moulin dam (Valpelline). Count approximately 10 hours of walk until Place Moulin and 1900 m of descent.
